“Women of Westminster – the legacy of Yorkshire’s first woman MP, Alice Bacon” talk by Rachel Reeves on 9th May.
An excellent talk by Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West, was enjoyed by our members and visitors. She gave an account of the history of the struggle, firstly to get women the vote, and then to be elected as Members of Parliament. She described the progress since Nancy Astor became the first woman to attend the House of Commons to Theresa May as our second female Prime Minister. She recounted the story of Alice Bacon, her personal hero and the first Yorkshire woman MP.
Rachel Reeves has written two books, “Alice in Westminster” and “Women of Westminster”, both of which were on sale at the meeting, and which Rachel kindly offered to sign for purchasers.
We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Wakefield who also attended the talk.
