Wakefield Historical Society provided four short talks about property they have been researching for the Heritage Open Days event at Unity Hall. We were delighted that there was as large an audience as the room could accommodate. The talks were about Thomas Waller Gissing (the father of the novelist George Gissing), the businesses and properties on Silver Street, the Elephant and Castle public house, and German immigrant butchers in Wakefield which included Hoffman’s.
We also had a stall selling our publications and a display of maps over the years. Leaflets about each of the individual properties we have been researching were available and demonstrated the scope and breadth of our research.
The event was organised by the Forgotten Women of Wakefield.
