South Leeds Archaeology has drawn our attention to the fact that Thwaite Mill may be under threat. Easy to access by public transport from Wakefield, it is one of the best working water mills in the country. Shutting it would mean bringing the lease to an early end – the cost of which is not made clear – and handing it back to the Canal and River Trust: whose finances have also been hugely reduced in the last many years. The closure would save just 2.5 FTE staff and £54k this coming year and £166k the next- such small savings compared with the loss of a whole museum is out of all proportion.
Leeds City Council are undertaking a consultation on the closure proposal …

The closing date for the consultation is 19th January.
