Wakefield Historical Society members Lesley Taylor and Shirley Levon have been invited to talk about John Smeaton and the Calder Navigation at the joint meeting of the South Yorkshire branch of the Newcomen Society and the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society on Monday 12th December. As local historians they were grateful for the advice given on 18th century waterway engineering by members of the Newcomen Society when they were researching for their book about John Smeaton’s work on the Navigation 1760-1763. Their research was instigated by the Society’s ‘Wakefield Waterfront Project’ in 2013.
Their book ‘John Smeaton and the Calder Navigation’ is still available through Wakefield Historical Publications.
