Talk at Wakefield Socialist History Society, 22nd October

Cuba, Revolution and Missiles Revisited: a look back 60 years on at war, empire and hope
Saturday 22nd October 1pm.
At the Red Shed, 18 Vicarage St, Wakefield, WF1 1QX

60 years to the day that the Cuban Missile Crisis erupted, a look back at the lead up to the closest the world has come – so far- to full-on nuclear war and how the crisis played out. We will discuss the setting of revolutionary Cuba, the US threats and interference then and since, and the Soviets’ role in this critical moment in the Cold War. What timely lessons can we learn from history?
Chaired by Kitty Rees, our speakers will be former NUPE steward and radical historian Robin Stocks and ecosocialist activist and blogger Adrian Cruden.

Bob Mitchell, former Labour Councillor and Wakefield Mayor, will give a personal account of his arrest at a peace protest during the missile crisis. There will be lots of time for questions and contributions from the floor.

After the Cuban discussion, we will also be discussing ideas for the future of the group – any topics, volunteers and suggestions for speakers. We are particularly keen to involve new speakers from a wider range of backgrounds, experiences and left-wing perspectives.
All interested people are welcome. The event is free and some nibbles will be served!
