Several Wakefield Historical Society members enjoyed an excellent talk: ‘A Lupset Farmer: Matthew Tomlinson’ at Horbury and District Historical Society on Wednesday 1st October. David Scriven who gave the talk is the editor of a soon-to-be published book with the transcription of Matthew Tomlinson’s Journals from the early 19th century. The original three Journals are held in Wakefield Libraries Local Studies collection. Tomlinson’s farm, Doghouse Farm, was at Lupset between Wakefield and Horbury. David described Tomlinson’s pre-occupations with the weather, with his religious beliefs, and his comments on local and national affairs, quoting many passages from the Journals. The intensely personal Journals still have relevance today, and we look forward to the publication by Wakefield Historical Publications in the near future.
