Talk ‘180 Years of Eastmoor: its people and their houses’
Wakefield Historical Society member, Dr Joanne Harrison gave a talk on Monday 24 June about the project to the Local and Family History Group which meets at Wakefield Library. Joanne had led the project which aimed to discover the history of Eastmoor from the Victorian period, the development of the Council estate, through to the present day.
Participants in the series of six workshops researched the architecture, the social history, and the changes over the years. Houses, shops and inns were included, and the history of those who lived and worked in them. Members of the group were encouraged to contribute their own knowledge and memories, and to conduct further research.
Historic images of the yards showed the conditions in past times before they were demolished and the council estate first built in the 1930s. Joanne’s excellent talk was enhanced by the detailed floor plans and drawings of the council houses which showed the changes as they were ‘improved’.
