Seeking information about a WWll casualty.
Frank Abell was a wireless operator and air gunner in WW2 who is buried at Bergen in the Netherlands. A member of the Dutch voluntary organisation which is researching the men who are buried there, contacted Wakefield Historical Society, hoping to find more information about his family, and any background information about him.
His service number was 1498310, RAF (VR), 115 Squadron; he died 24th August 1943, son of Alfred and Harriett Abell. We already have the information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and the International Bomber Command Centre about his death and burial.
In the 1939 Register Frank and his parents were living at 17 Tew Street, Wakefield. Alfred was born 6th October 1886 and was an ‘outside erector, fitter (heavy work) for fuel economisers (work of national importance). His wife Harriett, was born on 4 February 1888 and was undertaking ‘unpaid domestic duties’. Frank was born 20th February 1914, he was single and a ‘printer and letterpress machine ma**’, for the West Riding Police. There are no other members of the household.
