Our Society was contacted by Gosberton and District History Society as they were researching members of the Women’s Land Army in their area, many of whom came from Yorkshire, including Wakefield and Ossett.
They are holding an event on 20th September which includes a Roll Of Honour. Information from the Gosberton society follows:
Firstly, thank you for your contribution in assisting us put together our ‘Gosberton at War’ event.
I thought you both might be interested in the Role of Honour which will be displayed as part of our Women’s Land Army tribute. As you can see the vast majority of names are Yorkshire based women and whilst we may not have captured everyone who joined the W.L.A from youir area we are very pleased to honour the above.
Additionally we have two unique human stories to tell. We are still in touch with Norman Newlove from Hull, who was an evacuee in Gosberton and he is to attend our event and will be available to discuss his experiences. Also, we tell the heartbreaking story of Florrie Brier, named on our Role of Honour. At the age 19, Florrie was involved in a life changing farm accident whilst working on a local farm. We were ‘fortunate’ enough to obtain a ‘first hand’ account of the accident details, and along with press reports and photographs provided by her surviving son, we have made the story into a short, 8 minute film which will be regularly shown during the event. Additionally, Florrie’s son and wife are making the trip from Yorkshire and are expected to meet the son of the farmer owner, who they may never have met and who provided compelling detail of that ‘Black Day’ The Gosberton links to Yorkshire remain.
Whilst honouring our links to Yorkshire, the event will rightly concentrate on, and celebrate, the contribution our own resident made to the war effort.
