It sometimes seems that Wakefield born author George Gissing is more appreciated abroad than at home. So it is very welcome that one of his books, ‘The Odd Women’, is being dramatized for Radio 4. Episode 1 was on Sunday 9 October at 3pm, while episode 2 follows next week.
Written in 1893 it is about a topic which still has relevance today – the move of many women into work while there was a surge of opportunities for women as office workers in a boom in international trade. He treats the personal and political issues for women in a surprisingly modern way.
