Information from the YAHS:
The next YAHS lectures of the new season are due to take place this coming Saturday, 11th October, with a Family History lecture in the morning at 11.00 am and a Medieval lecture in the afternoon at 2.00 pm.
In the Family History session at 11.00 am Eric Jackson will speak about ‘Model Villages From Saltaire to Bourneville’. Eric is a former trustee of the Family History Federation and past secretary of the Pontefract and District Family History Society.
The lecture will be a hybrid event, offered in person at the St George’s Centre, 60 Great George Street, Leeds, LS1 3DL, and online. The St George’s Centre is a new venue for Family History lectures, near St George’s Church.
In addition to being given in person at the St George’s Centre, we plan to make the lecture available online via Zoom.
Following the Family History session, the Medieval Section lecture at 2.00 pm will be given online only. The speaker will be Julia Hewgill and her subject ‘Border reivers: from warfare, blood and violence to custom, laws and ballads‘. Ms Hewgill notes that: ‘the latter Middle Ages saw a transition from the Scottish Wars of Independence to intermittent cross border hostility and a sustained pattern of criminal activities that encompassed all levels of society on both sides of the border. Laws were created to settle disputes and deal with cross-border crime that led to reliance on a warden system, a unique form of architecture, the mother of all curses and a selection of ballads that celebrate the violence and feuds of the resulting society’.
