Our Society received an enquiry from the school historian at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth, asking if we could clarify where ‘Old Hall’ Sandal was. Jane Wilson the mother of Edith Ann Wilson was living there in 1901. It seems that the hall was on the site of Thomas A Beckett High School.
Edith Ann Wilson’s father Daniel was manager of the Calder Soap Works when she was born in 1865. Edith became a teacher, and in 1904 married Robert Henry Berney of Edinburgh. By 1911, the couple were both teaching in Godstowe School and living at Ulverscroft, Amersham Road, High Wycombe. It was here that Edith became active in the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies.
