In September 2019 our excursion programme included a visit to Calverley Old Hall near Leeds which is a Grade I listed medieval manor house with fabric dating from the 13th to 17th centuries. While part of it has been a Landmark holiday let for many years, the rest of the site – and the most historically significant – has fallen into disuse and such decay that it was on the Heritage at Risk Register. We were dismayed to see the condition of much of the fabric but entranced by the possibilities of saving and restoring this important building.
Landmark Trust who own it are now appealing for money for their project which will transform the whole site for new uses, thus securing its future and a dedicated space for the community. Throughout the restoration, rare craft skills will be passed on to trainees and apprentices.
